The story of the ragdoll begins in the United States, specifically in Riverside, California, when Ann Baker, a breeder of Persians, witnesses an accident. Josephine, a long-haired, blue-eyed, rather wild white gutter, was hit by a car. She was treated and recovered without visible after-effects.
The rest is not always clear, as there are many legends about the origin of the ragdoll. According to one version of the story, Josephine became a very gentle, docile and easily handled cat as a result of this accident. As her kittens also showed these characteristics, Ann Baker chose to give this new breed the name Ragdoll: ragdoll in English. At the time, Ann Baker even claimed that they were insensitive to pain. This is of course a fable without any scientific basis.
In the United States, the Ragdoll was recognised as early as 1965. In Europe, the first Ragdolls, direct descendants of Josephine, were imported to Great Britain in 1981 by the cattery "Blossom Time", which was instrumental in establishing the breed in Europe. In 1985, the Ragdoll was introduced in Germany and in 1986 in France.
